Nurture Me! Self-Care for the Empath

December 13, 2015

As I am sitting here with Spirit, the question I find myself asking questions around what I could share that would help and support empaths to understand the importance of self-nurturing and self-love.

As emath's you are naturally attuned to want to help and give to others, to embrace and be the natural healers that so many of you are and to take actions based on your highly in-tune intuition. In doing this, some empaths will consciously or unconsciously place others needs, wants and desires for physical, mental and emotional love and support above their own, often feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, tired and drained as a result of not allowing themselves to also receive what they need.  While being an empathy is often said to be a blessing and a curse, as you learn to understand what works best for you in terms of managing your sensitive nature as well as what your own need, wants and desires are you will be better able to receive the love, support and nurturing you require and deserve.

As an empath myself, I would recommend that you find a few different ways to nurture and nourish yourself spiritually and emotionally to ensure that you are able to put yourself first and not take on other people's energy.  Here are a few simple ways you can nurture and build in regular acts of self-love into your day:

  • Drink 8 or more glasses of water every day

  • Eat healthful & energising foods that uplift you

  • Breath and Meditate for 20 minutes every day

  • Cleanse your energy in the shower everyday

  • Smudge your environment and energy every day

  • Take three salt baths a week

  • Swim in the ocean once a week

  • Read from a variety of spiritually uplifting books to discover ways to nourish yourself spiritually

  • Spend an hour or two each week exercising (eg. walking, jogging, sketching, yoga or ti-chi)

  • Allow yourself to have fun & play (jump in puddles, blow bubbles, dance, surf etc)

  • Take up a hobby where you are being creative and artistic

  • Spend 15 minutes each morning journaling & visualising the day ahead

  • Take some time out to nurture you, whether through a massage, pedicure, manicure etc

  • Go and watch a movie or a comedy show thaat makes you laugh and feel joy

  • Spend time with friends who are loving, happy and supportive

Because an empath can be affected by others whether it be a partner, family member, friend, colleague, client or just someone in your environment, it is essential that you begin to find ways to protect yourself from the underlying needs and desires of those around you and to cleanse yourself everyday of anything you might have collected through that day.   By applying these simple techniques you will be able to feel full of energy and vitality again, the mind will be clear and you will look relaxed and nourished as well as be able to have your own needs, wants and desires in life satisfied.
