As many of you know, back in June 2016 I took a leap of faith, a massive step in a new direction and trusted that the Universe was guiding and supporting me and placing me where I needed to be to connect with, support and help people through both my mediumship work and transformational coaching. That landed me in Colombia (South America), Santa Marta in particular, where I knew very little of the language or culture, knew no one and had to plant my feet on the earth and build connections personally and professionally. I am blessed to have been connected with the most amazing people, who have taught me about unconditional acceptance, generousity of spirit and most of all that true happiness comes from within.
After living and working here in Santa Marta, Colombia for over 2 years now, I can certainly see why South America and Colombia in particular is quickly emerging as one of the top destinations to travel.
Yes, years ago, many traveller's avoided visiting Colombia because of its reputation and association with the drug cartels and violence, however, that has largely disappeared with the end of the conflict and signing of the Peace Agreement on August 24, 2016 ensuring a vastly safer and more secure place for you to visit and explore. It has become one of the most popular destinations for travellers and locals alike, with Lonely Planet naming Colombia the 2nd best country to visit in 2017 and tens of thousands of people safely visiting each year for tourism, business, study and volunteering to teach English, the only thing for you to do is come and check it out! With significant improvement to security, it is (like anywhere) still important to be aware of your surroundings, take practical precautions and normal safety considerations into account while travelling.
You will find Colombia to be filled with friendly, colourful and diverse characters who are incredibly passionate about everything, including their history, politics, culture, food, geography, climate, music, dancing ... everything! In the time I have been here in have only scraped the surface of half of what this beautiful country has to offer from the larger cities of Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena and Cali to the coffee region, Tayrona national park, the Rosario Islands, the Amazon, Ciudad Perdida, San Andrés... the list goes on. For those of you interested in a little more adventure, you can also trek to Colombia’s legendary Ciudad Perdida, or “Lost City,” which is hidden deep in the dense jungle near Santa Marta at the end of the retreat and enjoy a real Indiana Jones-style hiking experience. If you want to see more of Colombia while you are here or pop over to Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile or Brazil let me know and we can help you plan your trip!
Colombia's Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, where you will spend most of your time during the retreat, is inhabited by four indigenous communities (Wiwa, Kogi, Arhuaco and Kankuama) who still practice their ancient traditions as the guardians of the earth in the region they call "the heart of the world", which was recently declared the world's most irreplaceable nature reserve. To this day the Kogi, Arhuaco and Wiwa remain true to and talk openly about their ancient laws, traditions and spiritual beliefs about the force of creation, they identify as the Mother who is the spiritual core of all existence, and aluna, human thought, soul, and imagination. The indigenous people of this region believe that what is important, what has ultimate value, is not what is measured and seen but what exists in the many realms of meanings and connections that lie beneath the tangible realities of the world, linking and connecting all things as one.
